To mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of Spotify (2006), the 140th anniversary of the gramophone (1887) and the 150th anniversary of the phonograph (1877), the special exhibition tells the story of music recording and reproduction from its material manifestations (wax cylinders, shellac and vinyl records, cassettes and CDs) to its apparent "dissolution" into digital formats such as MP3 and streaming services.
In addition to the presentation of recording media and recording and playback technologies, the exhibition also focuses on the impact of recorded music on society and the performance practice of music.
Exhibits from the SIM's collection are complemented by loans from institutional and private lenders. A bilingual catalogue (German and English) is also planned for the exhibition.
