About us

The Staatliche Institut für Musikforschung is the largest non-university research center for musicology in Germany. Its home in the Berlin Kulturforum, between the Philharmonie and the Sony Center, designed by Edgar Wisniewski after sketches by Hans Scharoun, makes it as much a place of historical and theoretical reflection as it is a venue for active engagement with a broad audience of music enthusiasts. Our Musikinstrumenten-Museum hosts a wide range of events, from scientific symposia to lecture-concerts featuring early music played on historical instruments in our collection through to interactive sound installations. The Staatliche Institut für Musikforschung (SIMPK) is an institution of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation).
