Terms of use

The library of the State Institute for Music Research is a specialized scientific library, whose primary purpose is to support the scientists of the Institute in their work. However, it is also open to external users.

We have revised our library usage regulations with effect from 1 August 2025. The most important changes are
- the abolition of the minimum age for using the SIM library (see § 4),
- the cancellation of the fee for issuing a library card and
- the increase in reminder fees.
In addition, the previously separate fee regulations and the list of fees have been integrated into the user regulations. The following will apply from 1 August 2025:

All persons who have a residence registered with the police in the Federal Republic of Germany can be issued a free library card upon presentation of valid documents.

Users who do not return books on time or do not extend the loan period in their library account will receive a written reminder. At the same time, cumulative reminder fees are charged for each individual book. The next reminder level is reached every ten calendar days:
1st reminder: EUR 2.00
2nd reminder: EUR 5.00
3rd reminder: EUR 10.00
4th reminder: EUR 20.00
All outstanding fees are displayed in the library account. From a sum of 37 euros and from the 4th reminder, the library account is automatically blocked. Reminders for the first to third reminder will be sent by e-mail if an e-mail address is stored in the library account.

The library of the State Institute for Music Research, as part of the library network of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, belongs to the Common Library Network (GBV). We are currently in the process of creating our online catalog, so that some of our music holdings are, at this time, listed only in the card catalog. Our work to fill the online catalog is ongoing.

For complete reference information on older titles, the card catalog (Alphabetical Catalog, Systematic Catalog, Subject Catalog, and Subject Catalog of articles) is still available in the library.

Our manuscript and estate holdings are listed in the Kalliope portal. Please note that the use of manuscripts, bequests and collections is possible only after prior registration and appointment with the head of the library.
