Terms of use
The library of the State Institute for Music Research is a specialized scientific library, whose primary purpose is to support the scientists of the Institute in their work. However, it is also open to external users.
All persons who have reached the age of 18 and have an officially registered residence in Berlin can apply for an annual ID card to borrow material for use outside of the library, upon presentation of valid identification and payment of a user fee of 15 euros. Persons who have reached the age of 16 may be issued an annual ID card to use library holdings on site in the reading room of the State Institute for Music Research, upon presentation of valid identification and payment of a user fee of 5 euros. Upon presentation of an annual ID card from another library of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, the card for the library of the State Institute for Music Research will be issued free of charge. Please note that the Berlin Staatsbibliothek – Preußischer Kulturbesitz has suspended fees for its library cards since October 1, 2019.
For reasons of health protection and mutual consideration, the wearing of a mask (FFP2 or surgical mask) is still recommended. Patrons with acute respiratory illnesses are asked to postpone their visit to the library.
The library of the State Institute for Music Research, as part of the library network of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, belongs to the Common Library Network (GBV). We are currently in the process of creating our online catalog, so that some of our music holdings are, at this time, listed only in the card catalog. Our work to fill the online catalog is ongoing.
For complete reference information on older titles, the card catalog (Alphabetical Catalog, Systematic Catalog, Subject Catalog, and Subject Catalog of articles) is still available in the library.
Our manuscript and estate holdings are listed in the Kalliope portal. Please note that the use of manuscripts, bequests and collections is possible only after prior registration and appointment with the head of the library.
