Opening of the special exhibition on the history of music recording and playback. Featuring a keynote speech by Markus Kavka.
MUSIC ON DEMAND traces 150 years of technological innovation that have fundamentally transformed the way music is recorded, distributed and experienced. From Thomas Edison’s phonograph to today’s streaming platforms, it demonstrates how technological progress has shaped our listening habits, the music industry and society.
The exhibition offers a historical perspective on some of the most pressing issues facing the music and cultural sectors today. The development of music streaming has fundamentally transformed the production, distribution and reception of music, whilst also raising key questions regarding copyright, intellectual property and fair remuneration for artists.
The opening keynote address will be delivered by the renowned music journalist and television presenter Markus Kavka. Drawing on his personal experiences, he will shed light on the profound changes in music culture and music consumption over the past decades, thereby linking the exhibition’s historical perspective with current developments.

Markus Kavka (born 1967 in Ingolstadt) is a journalist and presenter. After working in print and radio, he began his career in music television in 1995 at VIVA. In 1997, he moved to VIVA ZWEI, and from 2000 to 2009 he was a presenter and producer at MTV Germany. Following further programmes on Kabel Eins, ZDFkultur and Nitro, he has been appearing on Deluxe Music since 2015. He is also a radio presenter, author, podcaster and DJ.
