The Berlin-based guitarist has put together a multi-generational project paying tribute to Carla (1936–2023) and Paul Bley (1932–2016), resulting in lively, spirited contemporary jazz. All those involved know one another from their musical work. Willers and the American drummer Bill Elgart, who has lived in Germany for many years, have both worked with Paul Bley themselves and are therefore very familiar with his lyrical, free-form approach, which comes to life particularly in their interpretation of Carla Bley’s compositions. The result does not come across as a nostalgic throwback, but is presented in a contemporary light and reflects their collaborative work on a modern jazz language.
