Medieval flutes, aspects on iconography, sources and performance

The knowledge on Renaissance and Baroque flutes is nowadays on a rise; on the contrary little is known on the medieval flutes. What do we know from the sources and how can we learn the from the iconography of the time? The presentation is aiming in giving ideas and information both from Western and Eastern sources, from iconography and literature, to this less known field. Furthermore, aspects on performance practice and instrumental techniques will aso be discussed.
Dr Dimitris Kountouras is active as a performer, scholar and teacher on Early Music and historical flute instruments.
The lecture will be held in English.
The venue is the seminar room of the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung. Access via the gate of the institute, Ben-Gurion-Straße, 10785 Berlin-Tiergarten.
