Concert

This concert takes us right into the heart of the vibrant musical life at the transition from the Baroque to the Galant style. The focus is on the major cities of London, Amsterdam and Paris. Musical life in London in the 18th century was dynamic, internationally influenced and commercialised; Italian opera was of central importance, whilst at the same time public concert series such as the Bach-Abel concerts were becoming established. At the same time, Amsterdam developed into a centre for music publishing and bourgeois musical culture, whilst in Paris the transition from the courtly splendour of the French Baroque style to private music-making and an Italian-influenced Galant style was taking place.

Shall it be Pietro dell’Antoni or Johann Joachim Quantz? Leila Schayegh and harpsichordist Martin Zimmermann bring with them no fewer than 45 manuscripts and prints, which they have previously checked only visually for completeness but have never played. The audience has the freedom to shape the programme themselves and is thus spoilt for choice: it is only once there that the listeners decide which works will be played. This spontaneously creates a unique programme that offers both interesting facts and entertainment regarding the selected pieces and their source material. The focus is on the impressive art of sight-reading – playing a score for the first time straight from the sheet.
