SIM Research Colloquium: Exhibition and performance. The Folklore Hall at the MIM

Event date: 04/22/2026
Location: Seminarraum SIM, 3 p.m.

Flavia Hennig (SIM) describes the design of the Folklore Hall at the Musical Instrument Museum as an “anti-concert hall”. In German

The Folklore Hall in the Musical Instrument Museum of the State Institute for Music Research occupies a special place within the architecture designed by Hans Scharoun and Edgar Wisniewski: as a hybrid space between exhibition and performance. Drawing on archival sources, this lecture traces the conceptual development of this space, which was designed as an ‘anti-concert hall’. The focus is on the changing functional attributions of the Folklore Hall – from an originally planned exhibition space, through an experimental performance space for jazz and folk music, to later debates on repurposing and redesign. In doing so, an attempt will be made to paint as detailed a picture as possible of these evolving spatial designs.
