20 Years of Jazz at the MIM
News from 07/13/2026
On 30 July at 7 pm, the SIM will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of its jazz series with three top-class acts and a sundowner bar on the roof terrace.

Since 2006, the Museum of Musical Instruments (MIM) at the State Institute for Music Research (SIM) has provided a venue for Berlin’s many modern jazz ensembles. To mark its 20th anniversary, the MIM will be hosting jazz pianist, composer and arranger Georg Ruby, the LUX:NM contemporary music ensemble berlin and the Argentine pianist Ramiro Zayas with his ensemble Collector. Weather permitting, a sundowner bar will be open on the SIM’s roof terrace.
The “Jazz at the MIM” series is organised in cooperation with the Berlin Composers’ Association. The programme is curated by the musicians and composers Hannes and Tobias Zerbe. Admission to the concerts is free. The venues are the Curt-Sachs-Saal and the Folkloresaal at the Museum of Musical Instruments, Ben-Gurion-Straße 1, 10785 Berlin, Tel. 030 2548 1178.
Georg Ruby – solo piano. Georg Ruby has recorded an album entitled *Soliloquies* (Self-Talks), which, on the one hand, falls under the umbrella of free improvisation, whilst on the other, it values the sound structures of New Music just as much as hints and traces of traditional jazz standards and the atmosphere of German pop music from the 1920s and1930s.
Ensemble LUX:NM Berlin. As part of the ‘nets-loops-cells’ series, LUX:NM – one of the most versatile ensembles for contemporary music – presents itself as a purely improvisational collective. Far removed from pre-written scores, the music emerges in the moment: dense sonic networks (nets), circular movements (loops) and delicate sound cells (cells) take shape through free improvisation.
Ramiro Zayas – Collector. Argentinian pianist Ramiro Zayas and his unique international chamber ensemble journey through contemporary jazz, free improvisation and multi-layered sonic textures. They explore melodies, harmonies and rhythms in a transparent, orchestral-inspired manner that leaves room for intense listening experiences.
