Wednesday Night Cinema: V. Arnheim – Die Hochbahnkatastrophe (1921)
Event date: 02/11/2026
Location: Musikinstrumenten-Museum, 6 p.m.
A gem of 1920s detective films. Live accompaniment on the Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ by Bernd Wurzenrainer.

The German Film Institute & Film Museum (DFF) restored this film from the German Harry Hill series, a gem of 1920s detective cinema, back in 2011. The public transport system of a large city is threatened by attacks, but a fearless young woman supports the detective in his fight against crime and terror. The film captivates with sensational stunts and comical moments. It is also fascinating to see how the medium of film is misused by the perpetrators as a method of communication.
Director: Valy Arnheim, DE 1921, 78 minutes, starring Jack Fox, Adalbert Lenz.
A film from the collection of the DFF (www.dff.film) in Frankfurt/Main.
At the Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ: Bernd Wurzenrainer
The Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ at the Musical Instrument Museum is one of the largest surviving instruments of its kind in Europe. In 1929, Werner Ferdinand von Siemens, the grandson of the company's founder, purchased it from the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company in North Tonawanda, NY. It has four manuals, 1,228 pipes, and more than 200 stops. In addition, there are a large number of percussion and effect instruments. Thunder rumblings and birds chirping, sirens wailing and bells ringing—the Mighty Wurlitzer's sound palette is impressive.
