Beloved, Soulmate – The Bandoneon in World Literature

Helena Rüegg, an internationally renowned bandoneonist, composer and author, and curator and translator Aurélie Maurin combine the sounds of the bandoneon with texts from world literature. The instrument is explored not merely as a musical instrument, but as a character in its own right, an object of longing and a faithful companion (‘soulmate’). Through poems, essays and excerpts from novels, the artists trace the bandoneon’s journey from its invention in Germany as a substitute for the church organ to its transformation in poverty-stricken Buenos Aires. Helena Rüegg’s live music not only accompanies the passages being read but also enters into a direct dialogue with the words.
