Yoga at the MIM
Event date: 11/05/2026
Location: Musikinstrumenten-Museum, 6 p.m.
A tandem guided tour through the world of the harmonium, focusing on the connection between sound, history and physical practice

The harmonium was developed in Europe in the 19th century and quickly found its place in churches and salons. During the colonial era, it made its way to India, where it was adapted: instead of foot pedals, it is played there using a hand bellows – ideal for the traditional sitting position on the floor. In this way, the harmonium became an integral part of Indian music, particularly for accompanying singing and mantras.
In this tandem workshop, a yoga teacher and a museum guide will take you on a journey through the world of the harmonium – combining sound, history and physical practice into a multi-layered experience.
After a brief introduction to the sounds of the Indian harmonium, we’ll delve into the instrument’s history as we walk through the museum. Then it’s time to get active: a yoga session right in the middle of the exhibition space gets body and mind moving – accompanied live by various keyboard instruments. The session concludes with meditative harmonium sounds, gently guiding us back into everyday life in Berlin.
