Dr. Dr. N. Andrew Walsh
Dr. Dr. N. Andrew Walsh is a composer (PhD SUNY Buffalo, 2009) and musicologist (Dr. phil. State College for Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart). In both domains his work is focused on the graphic scores of the postwar avant-garde. His research and creative work is dedicated especially to investigating the phenomenon of those scores that do not specify their musical outcome but nevertheless perform an essential instrumental role in an indeterminate musical exchange.
His research project at the State Institute for Musical Research in the summer of 2025 is directed toward examining the students and musicians active in Erhard Karkoschka's composition class, and in the Ensemble for New Music he directed, in Stuttgart of the 1960s and 70s, illuminating a key figure in the transfer of knowledge and its practices in the German postwar. Through gathering first-hand testimony of eyewitnesses from among Karkoschka's students and collaborators, this project will serve to close a gap in our knowledge of the history of a transformative scene in the arts of the 20th century.
