The Berlin Musikinstrumenten-Museum pursues discology for the reason that radio, records and CDs are media of music just as is any traditional musical instrument. In an interdisciplinary manner, discology deals with sound carriers as musicological documents of

a) performance practice

b) the sensuous and conscious perception of music

c) the interplay of music and its commercialisation.

The, discology is a science which studies sound carriers in general and commercially reproduced sound carriers in particular as manifestations of cultural ideas. For research projects in the field of discology, the museum provides   sound documents of instruments from its own collection as well as comparable instruments in other museums.

The   SIM library holds the most relevant discography reference books for classical music
